Day 2 - Air boat Ride in the Bayou |
Posted: July 13, 2024 - Atchalafaya, LA
In the afternoon we went over to Atchalafaya LA to take a air boat tour of the swamps and bayou's in the area. It was pretty cool to get back into the waterways and see what its like. The tour guide had specific spots to stop where alligators are at which was cool. They seemed to know him :-) They got really close to the boat and he dropped some food in the water for them. I'm guessing the one gator was about 8 ft I think. We hit two different spots where they knew gators would be which was cool. At the second stop, the gators came from quite a distance to the boat - almost like dogs. I believe these two were a pair, one maie and one female. it was neat to see them up close. We then continued traveling through the waterways when all of a sudden, the tour guide told us to hold on. He had lost steering control of the boat, a part of the steering mechanism had snapped and broke. No harm done but were stranded in the bayou. I could hear the Deliverance music starting to play in my mind :-). Our Guide called into the home base and had them run out a new part which took about 20 mins. it was an exciting addition to our adventure sure. We then continued the boat ride across the swamps and back to the docks. I have to say that some of the swamp lands out there are beautiful with the different foliage and trees - very interesting to see. Glad we made the trip over to see this. |

Day 2 - Touring Lafayette, LA |
Posted: July 13, 2024 - Lafayette, LA
Our adventures for today started in Lafayette LA, the heart of Cajun country I believe. We made stop at the visitor's center to check it out and get some information. The Visitor's Center was pretty cool, and had a small water pond out back on a porch - fish and tortoise abound! We had a few hours to kill before our reservations for a air boat tour so we got a recommendation to go check out the Vermilionville Heritage Site nearby. This place traced the heritage of the Cajun culture in the area which was neat to hear about. There was a tour guide up front that gave a good overview of Cajun history and the history of this local area. As I recall, the thing that stuck out to me was that many of the early inhabitants from this area were from French Canada Acadia) - immigrants that migrated down here. I forget the explanation of how "Cajun" came about but it has something to do with the Acadia. The exhibits were very interesting showing the history of the culture and the grounds were really cool too, with several period houses to tour with relics inside. This was a cool place to visit, glad we took the time to see it. |

Day 1 - Visiting with Haley, Tank and Jalen @ Home |
Posted: July 12, 2024 - Sulpher, LA
We drove down to Haley and Tank's house for the weekend and took Charlie with us to drop him off for a stay. On the way down we stopped at a little eatery in Newton TX for a bite to eat. The food was good, and the restaurant motive was pure Cajun. Across the street was the courthouse on the square, with a neat Bell display dating back to 1929. Very cool. The we continued on to get to Haley's house. Grandma had purchased something off the marketplace for Jalen to have fun with. Tank assembled the roller coaster car ride and Jalen took a spin on it - oh boy, I think he liked it. And its multi-versatile, he can put his cars on the track and have them run down the ramp as well :-). Hoping this is something he will enjoy. |
